Reiki:
What is Reiki?
Rei means Universal and Ki means energy or life force. Reiki is the practice of transmitting healing energy through the hands, based on simple, ancient healing techniques. Reiki uses specific hand positions, on or above parts of the body that correspond to the major organs and energy centers, such as the heart or adrenal glands. Because the purpose of Reiki is to increase your own self-healing powers, it is helpful for any sort of ailment - physical, mental or emotional. Reiki is used to heal everything from stress and simple skin rashes to migraine headaches and cancer pain. It is also effective in conjunction with psychotherapy for people / animals that have experienced emotional trauma. Reiki is a powerful yet gentle hands-on technique used as an aid in treating any type of illness. It is received when the practitioner places their hands on or over the subject or above specific injured areas. Reiki is always positive and it will never cause harm. Because it is the universal life force energy, the practitioner will not pass on any of their own negativity, the practitioner merely acts as a channel for the Reiki energy.
Reiki is a Complementary therapy and therefore is not a substitute for medical or veterinary care - it is used alongside traditional methods to enhance the healing process.
There are many people, myself included, who believe that unreleased negative emotions actually causes illness of the body or dis-ease. Emotions are a powerful force and can cause many chemical reactions within your body. After sustained periods of time these chemical imbalances will cause your physical body to react with 'symptoms' as a way of drawing your attention to deal with the emotional problem. Reiki treats the person or animal in a holistic or whole-istic way and therefore helps with the underlying issues of the present symptoms. Traditional medicine tends to treat the symptoms and not the original cause of the illness and therefore if the root causes are not addressed the problem will once again erupt as a different set of symptoms. Reiki can help by releasing the energy blockages at the root cause and help to restore the natural balance of the body and mind minimising the chances of further dis-ease further down the line.
The Reiki Principles:
The Reiki principles provide a workable philosophy to help self healing. Living by these simple ideas helps us to move towards a more positive outlook and supports the long term effects of Reiki. 'Just for Today' concentrates our mind onto the present moment. We cannot change the past or determine the future, the only moment we have to work with is the present one. It is a gift, that is why it is called the 'present' - use it wisely.
The Five Reiki Principles

- Just for today, I will not be angry.
Anger at others or oneself or at the whole world, creates serious blockages in one's energy. It is the most complex inner enemy. Reiki is an excellent tool to remove anger blockages which have accumulated in the body over years, but it cannot remove the residue of current anger which occurs daily. Letting go of anger brings Peace into the Mind. - Just for today, I will not worry.
While anger deals with past and present events, worry deals with future ones. Although worry is not always a negative phenomena, endless worries may fill one's head, and each one bores a small hole in one's body and soul. Letting go of worry, brings healing into the Body. - Just for today, I will be grateful.
Be grateful from your heart inward. Inner intention is the important element in this principle. Simple things as thanks, forgiveness, smile, good words, gratitude can improve others life and make them happy. Being thankful brings Joy into the Spirit. - Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Support yourself and your family honestly, without harming others. Earn a respectable living, live a life of honor. Working Honestly brings Abundance into the Soul. - Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
Essentially we are all as one, to love one another is to love oneself. Recognise the 'God' in every living thing. Being Kind brings Love into the Will.
A Commitment to Well-Being:
Reiki is a wonderful Healer but we must also make a commitment to our own well being. It is a bitter pill to swallow, but many people have an invested interest in being 'ill'. We are looked after, get plenty of visitors, fuss and attention and have an excuse for poor behaviour towards others and also ourselves! Reiki will help to alleviate dis-ease with in the body but only YOU can aid long term 'well being'. Working with the above principles will help tremendously as will 'attuning' to the Reiki Energy itself.
Please remember the Laws of Nature still apply. Reiki will not render you immune from the stresses of life and it will not secure you from Natural Law. For example: if you cut yourself and don't wash the area and keep it lightly covered, you are inviting infection. If you subject your body to negative emotions, stress, anxiety, alcohol, poor diet or lack of exercise you will, sooner or later, suffer the consequences. We are part of a natural system and as such we are subject to its laws. Our bodies are part of the system. We ignore our biology at our peril. Reiki is not an insurance policy against living in an unhealthy manner. Rather, Reiki will support you in actively promoting your general improvement. In short, you will make the most of Reiki by following the other accepted principles of healthy living too.
